When we think about truck drivers, construction workers, garbage collectors, mechanics and electricians, few of us immediately imagine women performing these tasks but more and more women are working in nontraditional roles here in Mackay.
For many years, women have not been associated with, or considered for, jobs in male-dominated industries but at M Group Tyre & Mechanical they have been employing women in nontraditional roles for years.
As a local company, M Group Tyre & Mechanical have been leading the way by employing and training women in their business. The Group now consists of 6 stores including Sarina, Emerald and Rockhampton and as an industry leader in the region, M Group Tyre & Mechanical pride themselves on not only their product and customer service but on their team behind the scenes.
Charlie Bone, Director of Finance & Administration says ‘At M Group Tyre & Mechanical we choose the right person for the job, regardless of gender. For many women and girls who are trying to decide about where they wish to develop their career, the idea that they could work in a mechanical workshop is simply out of the question. You can't be what you can't see.’
The local tyre company wanted to put the spotlight on not only M Group Tyre & Mechanical being an employer of choice in the region but an employer of choice for women. Ros Way is showing she can’t be held down by being named Manager of the Sarina Store. Ros started working for the business in 2001 in an administration role. With mentor Keith Beattie’s trust in her ability to shine, she moved from admin into a sales role which would have traditionally been filled by men. Ros Way remembers many moments when her customers were surprised she knew more about tyres then they did. Mr Bone stated ‘When Keith retired Ros was the perfect choice to move into the management of the entire store and we are thrilled to have her managing the Sarina Store’.
In addition to a Ros being made Manager of the Sarina store, Tia Hamilton, 24, a recently qualified light vehicle mechanic, has just commenced work at M Group Tyre & Mechanical Canelands. She was chosen from a large selection of applicants and has become the newest member of the team and another woman working in a nontraditional role with the group. Tia has tried a few careers but with her love of mechanics, and cars has pushed her to this career. People are often surprised to hear what she does for a living and that she is a qualified mechanic but when they see how much she loves it and how well respected she is by her peers they realise she has the perfect job.
M Group Tyre & Mechanical are leading the way by employing women in nontraditional roles is their stores and look forward to bringing more women into the group.
Rural View Store opened in June 2013 at Northern Beaches and the local people love not having to drive into town. Donna Ryder - Store Manager said “We’ve had a great response from the public. We drop them over to the shopping centre or home and offer them a cappaccino while they’re waiting for their cars to be serviced and they’re really happy with the convenience of having a store out this way.”
